New York International Salsa Congress

August 25, 2009

Hi readers,

I have been looking over the schedule to plan my time at the congress efficiently and around my work shcedule.  I thought that transferring the NYISC salsa schedule to word and printing it smaller will keep me on track at the congress.  If you want to do the same feel free to download the NYISC_Schedule and print it.  Be sure to double check the official website for changes.

Hope to see many of you there!

Appearance on ABC

August 11, 2009

I am glad that the sunset salsa crew got some needed exposure on ABC.  The event is ending soon and hopefully this will give it the boost it needs to help spread the word.

You can even see me, in a white shirt, at some point trying to help out another salsa dancer with her moves.

Lesson with Talia

April 9, 2009

I took a lesson with Talia, from Stepping Out Studios, and it’s always an amazing experience practicing with a pro.  It seems to take a casual dancer to another level.  It inspires me to be better and to try really hard to correct my styling.  I worked on a few moves with my wife and Talia and put together a short combination of intermediate routines including the copa, a scoop, a wrap, and an around the world.  Hopefully I’ll get somewhat better and post it.

My recommendation is to mix your regular dance classes with a few private hours of instruction to get that one on one experience.

Dance sneaker style

January 17, 2009

I was always against wearing dance sneakers to class because they lacked style.  I guess I should care less about how what my shoes look like and more about how my dance looks like.  So while browsing around zappos.com I found a pair of Nike dance sneakers.  Since I already have a pair of futuristic looking dance sneakers I am going to buy these and compare.  If anyone has already tested them please comment.

La Nacional Salsa Party

September 20, 2008

Last night I attended a salsa party hosted by Talia Castro-Pozo at La Nacional in Manhattan.  Since I know Talia I figured I’d be there early enough to assist in the salsa beginner class.  There were about 12 participants and they learned everything from the beginner basic, back breaks, and some partnering with a right handed turn.  The venue started getted full around 9:45pm.  At 11pm they had a Lambada dance routine performed by Australian visitiors.  Talia tells me that the reason she started a Friday night salsa party is because her salsa party on Mondays at Taj is very successful and dancers that couldn’t attend on Mondays requested something on Friday.

If you are around 14th street and feel in the mood to learn or watch some sals dancers google her flyer, print, it, bring it for a reduced rate, and come and dance.

There is a lot of dance floor space and seating so you won’t feel cramped.  Cash bar with beer and wine only.

Salsa withdrawal

September 6, 2008

I am suffering the withdrawal pains of not dancing salsa in a long while.  A few weeks ago I decided to go to Sandbar in NJ to get a few hours of dance in, but the DJ’s playlist was terrible.  Sound system kept cutting out and overall it wasn’t that pleasant.

I thought about attending the NY salsa congress’ Friday or Saturday party but there was now gold standard headlining act.  Personally, I believe that any big salsa event in NYC should have an act of great magnitude.  Salsa dancers in NY are trully dedicated and have come to expect a certain level of “grand-ness” at salsa events.  Its only half the fun when dancing at a premier city without a headlining salsa band.

After talking to some attendees the results were that dancing was at a high and everyone had fun.

Let’s see what NY salsa congress can do to step it up for next year

AFROBODY MOVEMENT

June 23, 2008

A good friend of mine is teaching a class on free expression dance. He is a great on 2 salsa dancr and has always dedicated himself entirely to the things he loves to do. I am certain that his class will be interesting and fun. If you decide to take his class let me know. I hope to try it myself one day.

“The class will be about learning to hear the music and expressing it through body movement. No 123-567. Body isolations and musicality to add flavor to your dancing.”

You can find his schedule at www.salsafeveron2.com. Search for Johnny Aracena.

Wondering where to practice on Wednesdays in NJ?

May 20, 2008

I live in New Jersey and it is pretty annoying having to commute from NYC on a week night to spend some time practicing at a Latin lounge.  I have not checked this place out yet but if you do please let us know what you think.
